German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday offered conditional support to French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposals for reforming the European Union, such as introducing a finance minister and a budget for the eurozone.
“The danger in the departure negotiations with Britain is that we don’t focus enough on our own future,” Merkel said at the annual meeting of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), a lobbying group.
Macron, who won the French presidency last month after campaigning on a staunchly pro-EU platform, has argued for deeper cooperation within the bloc, particularly in the eurozone.
